Genetic Recovery

The Ayrshire Genetic Recovery Program provides breeders with a procedure to capture the genetic characteristics of superior grade animals and, through several generations of planned matings, develop animals eligible for the Ayrshire Herd Registry. The procedure involves a three-generation upgrading program where the third and subsequent generations are eligible for complete Ayrshire Herd Book acceptance.

Any dairy producer in the United States may participate in the program by completing the appropriate application forms, adhering to the established identification policies and regulations, and submitting the fees required by the U.S. Ayrshire Breeders’ Association.

Generation One: Original Animal (OA)
Female animals with a purebred registered Ayrshire parent may be identified on an Ayrshire Registry Certificate with an OA prefix to the animal name. OA animals must be identified by tattoo or eartag/photo as outlined in the “Rules for Registering”.

Generation Two: Provisional Registry (PR)
Female and male descendants of an OA (original animal) sired by a registered Ayrshire which are 75% registered Ayrshire are eligible for Provisional Registry and may be identified on an Ayrshire Registry Certificate with a PR prefix to the animal name. PR animals must be identified by tattoo or eartag/photo as outlined in the “Rules for Registering”.

Generation Three: Genetic Recovery (GR)
Female and male descendants of PR dams sired by a registered Ayrshire may be identified as “genetically recovered” on an Ayrshire Registration Certificate with a GR prefix to the name. GR animals are accepted into the Official Ayrshire Association Herd Book. Daughters and sons of GR animals are accepted into the Herd Book without prefix designation. GR animals must be identified by tattoo or eartag/photo as outlined in the “Rules for Registering”.
